Keeping Things Fun, Fresh, and Fashionable

It feels about 20 degrees outside, it's pouring rain, and I still have those 10+ pounds from Christmas that I need to get rid of.

But hey -- winter worries can't pull the wool over my eyes! I know Spring is just around the corner, and I don't see why I should wait another minute to start planning for the most enchanting time of the year. Who's with me?

I'm gonna share some of my fanciful ideas and most inspiring discoveries to give you the little boost you need to get to the "out like a lamb" part.

1. Start transitioning your scarves. ladies! This is one of the most exciting of whimsical seasons for fashion, where the weather is as unpredictable as your ex. What's the one thing you can count on? A scarf! Start putting away those heavy knits and plushy, plump boa constrictors and toss on a flowy, gauzy little number. Not only can it be worn a million different ways, but it can help turn your monochromatic March wear into a glorious beacon of hope for others still stuck in a mental snowdrift.

2. Are you one of those people who runs in horror when they hear the word "orange?" I've only met one in my life who wasn't. Well, don't run. I promise it's better than it sounds. Bad news first: Orange is one of Spring's topmost trendy colors. GOOD NEWS: (don't run yet!) YOU CAN WEAR IT. Yes, you heard *ahem* read correctly. Cuz we ain't just talkin' the color of a Dunkin Donuts sign. Picture fairylike shades of coral, apricot, Caribbean sand, fresh peaches, and a moody Novermber sunset. Take your pick.
Do you have cool undertones and are unable to wear this cutting edge color near your face? No problem. Polish your nails in your favorite shade, (www.opi.com -- my favorite is "Y'all Come Back, Ya Hear?"), wear a few cheap bangles to add to the festivity, choose a winning skirt, or add a surprise pop of creamsicle in some fun sandals.

3. Decorate with flowers -- anywhere! I'm talking the fake ones. Not the giant plastic leaves you find in the dimly lit clearance aisle, but the exuberant pastel petals which don't break the bank! You can find a pretty yet paltry selection at your local dollar store, or for a wider variety check out an art store such as Michael's or A.C. Moore.
I understand that these pretty little charlatans can't compare to the real deal, but it's amazing what they can do for your mood until the Azaleas start sprouting! I'm a college student with limited living space and decorating options, but I've received a zillion compliments on my own little work of art. (Sorry, no pictures. I'm home for spring break!)
To begin I hung a regular wall mirror in between two windows. This reflects the light making the room seem larger, and, of course, brighter. Then I twisted together fake vines (dollar store) and flirty pink blooms (wal-mart) and attached them to the rim of the mirror. This way the standard brown shade of the mirror rim is completely covered in frothy blooms. Then I wound remaining vines around the windows flanking the mirror, which brought the whole thing together. Voila! My whitewashed dorm room becomes a fairy wonderland.All for the grand total of $7.50.
